Berlin spreads instead of stacking

There is no coffee street here, and no district that won the argument. Kreuzberg, Neukölln, Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain and Wedding each behave like a small town with its own hours and its own crowd, and the gaps between them are longer than a map suggests: Kottbusser Tor to Kastanienallee looks like a stroll on a phone screen and eats most of an hour on foot. Berlin is also the only German city with cafes mapped here — Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Leipzig and the rest are not covered yet — so a route built from these pages stays inside one city, which is the way to build it anyway. Take two adjoining districts per day, walk one and ride a few stops into the other. You will drink better than someone crossing the city three times to tick off names.

The roastery and the cafe share a door

Bonanza, Five Elephant, 19grams, Fjord, Cebe, Impala and Andraschko all roast in Berlin, and here that usually means the people who roasted the coffee are the people handing it to you. It changes what is worth asking at the counter. Ask when the lot landed and what it replaced; ask what they are dialling in this week rather than what is best. Order the same coffee as espresso and as filter if both are on — the gap between them is the clearest thing a roaster-run bar can show you, and nobody at that counter has to defer to a supplier to explain it. Expect rooms that read as workshops before they read as cafes: bare concrete, the drum visible or one floor away, bench seating, and a queue out the door by eleven on a Sunday.

Bags from Hamburg, Frankfurt and Monheim am Rhein

Some of the roasters listed for Germany sit well outside the city and have no bar on this map: Elbgold in Hamburg, Hoppenworth & Ploch in Frankfurt am Main, BEANLAB in Monheim am Rhein. Treat them as shelf names rather than destinations for now — worth an order once you know what you like from the Berlin bars, so you have something to compare against. If you do buy beans in the city, buy them at the end of the day rather than the start; nobody enjoys a second district with a kilo in the bag.

Two habits make a Berlin coffee day work. Go early — the stretch between opening and half past ten is the only reliable window before laptops claim the tables and the breakfast crowd settles in for two hours. And carry cash. Plenty of small rooms still prefer it, and the one that does is rarely the one you were willing to skip.
