Bochum's observatory began in 1946 as an astronomy course at the municipal adult education centre. In October 1957 it was the first station in the West to pick up and confirm the Sputnik signal, and a decade later a twenty-metre dish went up beside it, which listened in on the Apollo 11 landing. Not bad for an evening class: by the mid-seventies the place was taking half a million marks a year from West German intelligence. The antenna still works and pulls down data from NASA probes every day.
