About coffee in Essen
In Essen, for a hundred years, coffee was handed out by your employer. Krupp ran its own Konsumanstalt for the workforce - shops, canteens, beer halls - and its own coffee roastery alongside; just before the First World War there were eleven beer halls for every three company cafes. A worker did not pay cash at the counter but had it written into a booklet, and at the end of the year got a share of the profit back. Coffee had one job in works like these: to pull people away from vodka and keep them on the job to the end of the shift.
