Warsaw's first cafe opened by the Ogród Saski in 1724 and closed again quickly, because nobody wanted it. Coffee was held at the time to be an overseas poison that took away your sleep and your fertility, and drinking it in front of other people was considered indecent. Two generations later, the reforms that produced the Constitution of 3 May were being talked over at cafe tables. Coffee caught on in this city only once it stopped being a drink and became a pretext for a conversation there was nowhere else to have.
