In October 1945 German social democracy was reborn not in any of the big cities but in a hotel by the station in Wennigsen. The reason was mundane: in ruined Hanover there was nothing to feed the delegates with, so several dozen of them were put up in private rooms in this village below the Deister. The British agreed to one day of proceedings, Schumacher and his people sat for three, and the arrivals from the Soviet zone were refused a vote. The hotel goes by a different name today, and the memorial stands opposite the station - you pass it every morning on the way to work in Hanover.
