About coffee in Leipzig

Leipzig and Saxony at large have their own words for thin coffee: Blümchenkaffee is a brew so weak you can see the little flower painted on the bottom of the cup through it, and Schwerterkaffee the crossed swords, the mark of the Meissen manufactory. The real test came in the GDR, when there was no hard currency left for beans and Kaffee-Mix appeared in the shops: half coffee, half roasted peas, rye and sugar-beet pulp. The pea flour swelled under pressure and clogged the filters of the machines in catering, and the blend was christened Erichs Krönung on the spot, a dig at the western Jacobs Krönung. It was killed by an ordinary refusal to buy it - after a few months the Politburo ordered production stopped.
