About coffee in Rotterdam

In 1782 Johannes van Nelle opened a shop on the Leuvehaven selling coffee, tea and tobacco, and a century and a half later his company was selling coffee by way of the Brothers Grimm. One of the employees reworked the tale of the fisherman and his wife into the story of Piggelmee, a gnome who lived in an old stoneware pot. You got the pictures for his little books in exchange for stamps collected when buying coffee and tea, and the gnome went on to appear on gramophone records and on stage. Van Nelle coffee came to an end in the nineties, and the gnome got his own postage stamp in 2008 - here the advertising outlived the product.
