About coffee in Dusseldorf

In 1907 Johanna Ey opened a bakery with coffee on Ratinger Straße, two steps from the Academy of Fine Arts. Students who could not afford it ran a tab or paid in drawings, so the till filled up with pictures instead of coins. When the war took her customers away, she closed the place and started selling those drawings: she became the first woman in Germany to run her own gallery, and Max Ernst had his first solo show with her. The Nazis later broke up that collection as degenerate art - a collection that had come out of coffee bills nobody could afford.
