About coffee in Bremen
Decaffeinated coffee is a Bremen invention and it came out of grief: Ludwig Roselius lost his father, a coffee merchant, and the doctors blamed caffeine. In 1906 he patented a way of removing it and founded Kaffee HAG, the first company in the world to sell coffee without caffeine, with a red heart and a lifebuoy in the logo, because what it sold was not flavour but health. It was the first coffee in history to advertise in the cinema, with a slogan about nerves of steel thanks to sport and HAG. With that money Roselius went on to build Böttcherstraße, a hundred metres of brick expressionism that the Nazis denounced as degenerate art: it stands to this day, paid for by coffee with the thing you drink it for taken out.
