About coffee in Traunstein

Traunstein had no salt of its own - it had forest, and that turned out to matter more. Nearby Reichenhall had brine in abundance but had run out of wood to boil it down with, so the Bavarian duke turned the problem around: he had the brine pumped to where the trees were. It ran through the mountains, 346 meters uphill, through seven water-driven pumping stations and 8,342 hand-drilled tree trunks - the world's first pipeline started up in 1619 and worked for nearly three hundred years. The saltworks left behind a park, and its main building, blown up by the Reichswehr, left behind a parking lot.
