About coffee in Trnava

The café across from Trnava's town hall was officially called Otthon, and later Európa, but the whole town just called it Thalmeiner's. The headwaiter wore tails, the waiters served only in dinner jackets, and the composer Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský reputedly had his own reserved seat. After nationalization Ferdinand Thalmeiner lost the place, and in 1953 his family was given 24 hours to move to Bratislava, where he worked out the rest of his life at a scrap collection yard. The café carried on without him as the Krym, and it was the new name that ended up in the cup: coffee made by pouring boiling water straight over the grounds was served there as a krymka.
