Specialty coffee in Brno: 60 checked cafés

At the turn of the twentieth century Brno had thirty-seven cafés, of which three were Czech; the rest spoke German and took their cue from Vienna. Between the wars nowhere, not Prague and not Vienna itself, opened as many functionalist cafés as this city did. The one Bohuslav Fuchs built for Josef Zeman was nationalized and turned into a kindergarten, then demolished in 1964 because it was in the way of the Janáček Theatre. It has stood again since 1995, as a faithful replica, two hundred meters from where it really stood.
