About coffee in Saarbrucken
For a few post-war years the Saar was a miniature state of its own: its own currency, a customs border with Germany but not with France, and its own national team, which FIFA recognized before it recognized the West German one. In qualifying for the 1954 World Cup, Germany had to travel to Saarbrücken for an away match — 53,000 in the stands, and on the home bench Helmut Schön, the same man who twenty years later would win the World Cup with West Germany. The hosts finished behind in the group, and one of their players admitted years later that he felt German anyway and didn't want to block the others' road to Switzerland. The Germans went, and won the whole thing.
