About coffee in Passau
Around 1611 the executioner of Passau began selling slips of paper covered in mysterious signs to the soldiers of Emperor Matthias. You swallowed such a scrap, or sewed it into a little bag worn on your chest, and from then on bullets were supposed to pass you by. The imperial army came back from its campaign into Bohemia almost without losses, so word spread, and for the whole of the Thirty Years' War soldiers wore these papers under their shirts. Passau also forged swords marked with the running wolf from the town's coat of arms, because the sign alone was believed to protect - but paper was what sold best here.
