About coffee in Hagen
Cherries from Hagen were carted to market in Osnabrück for centuries - the first mention of them was written down in 1603. After the First World War the growers worked out that in Münster they got forty pfennigs more a pound, and stopped coming, and Osnabrück answered with protest marches through the village. The riots, which the town chronicle recorded as the Kirschkrawalle, died down only once the Reichswehr had been relieved of a machine gun and order had been restored by gunfire. The trees survived the quarrel better than relations between the neighbors did: forty-one varieties have been counted in the old orchards, seven of them previously thought extinct.
