About coffee in Eberswalde
Gustav Zietemann, a Berlin confectioner, opened his shop here in 1832 and discovered that choux pastry comes out better if you pipe it onto paper and fry it in fat instead of baking it. Ten years later the railway to Szczecin was run through Eberswalde, and Zietemann sent his journeymen onto the platform to shout Eberswalder Spritzkuchen through the windows of the waiting trains. The town's name traveled on with the passengers and stuck for good to a fried ring in icing. A bronze boy holding spritzkuchen stands at the station today, a monument less to the confectioner than to his idea for the platform.
