Hugo Erfurt, a pharmacist born in Schwelm, needed something to dress a shop window in 1864 and embedded wood fibers in paper. Wallpaper came out of it by accident: for decades it was display paper and a lining under other wallpapers, and it only got the name Raufaser after the First World War. It reached the walls of people's homes in the twenties and never came off them again - today it is the best-selling wall covering in Germany, a rough white surface you paint over again at renovation time instead of stripping it off. The trademark expired long ago, so everyone makes it now, and the town is left with nothing but the authorship.
