Coffee to water ratio calculator
How much coffee for 250 ml?
Grams of coffee for common amounts of water at three everyday ratios.
| Water | Coffee at 1:15 | Coffee at 1:16 | Coffee at 1:17 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150 ml | 10 g | 9.4 g | 8.8 g |
| 200 ml | 13.3 g | 12.5 g | 11.8 g |
| 250 ml | 16.7 g | 15.6 g | 14.7 g |
| 300 ml | 20 g | 18.8 g | 17.6 g |
| 350 ml | 23.3 g | 21.9 g | 20.6 g |
| 400 ml | 26.7 g | 25 g | 23.5 g |
| 500 ml | 33.3 g | 31.3 g | 29.4 g |
| 750 ml | 50 g | 46.9 g | 44.1 g |
| 1,000 ml | 66.7 g | 62.5 g | 58.8 g |
1:15 gives a fuller cup, 1:17 a lighter one. Weigh the water you pour, not the drink: the grounds keep about twice their weight in water.
Which ratio for which method?
Common starting points, not rules. Taste, then change one thing at a time.
Pour-over
V60, Chemex, Kalita and other drippers usually start somewhere between 1:15 and 1:17. Closer to 1:15 tastes fuller, closer to 1:17 lighter and more delicate.
Immersion
French press, AeroPress and Clever work with similar ratios. Many recipes sit between 1:12 and 1:17. Concentrates (AeroPress, cold brew) are brewed stronger and diluted afterwards.
Espresso
Espresso is measured as a brew ratio: ground coffee to the drink in the cup. A common starting point is 1:2, for example 18 g in and 36 g out. The calculator above is for filter and immersion brews.
