About coffee in Krefeld
In 1683 thirteen Krefeld families boarded the ship Concord in Rotterdam and stepped off it in Philadelphia - Americans still mark 6 October as German-American Day because of that crossing. Five years later, in the Germantown house of the Krefelder Thones Kunders, four men wrote down the first public protest against slavery in America, and two of them, the op den Graeff brothers, had come over on that ship. The Quakers passed the paper from one meeting up to the next until in the end nobody either adopted it or rejected it, and the document disappeared for a hundred and fifty years. It surfaced again in the abolitionist era, then went missing a second time and only came back in 2005 - out of a safe in the meeting house on Arch Street.
