About coffee in Giessen

Caffeine was isolated elsewhere, but it was in Gießen that someone counted up what it is actually made of. Justus Liebig built a glass tube bent into a triangle here in 1831, a five-bulb apparatus for the analysis of organic compounds, and it was with this that he established the composition of caffeine. The American Chemical Society has that same shape in its logo today, and in Gießen itself the winner of the single sculls at the Whitsun regatta receives it as a challenge trophy. Not many towns parade quite so openly the instrument with which they took caffeine apart.
