About coffee in Traben-Trarbach
Around 1900 Traben-Trarbach was the second-biggest center of the wine trade in Europe after Bordeaux - Mosel riesling was being drunk in Russia, in Scandinavia, in America and in the colonies in Africa. More than a hundred wine firms operated here, and their owners built themselves Art Nouveau villas and brought in an architect from Berlin, who even designed them a bridge gate. The money vanished, the villas stayed, and under the streets run the cellars left from that trade: single vaults a hundred meters long, the temperature holding at twelve degrees all year round. In December a Christmas market is held down in them, a few meters below the level of the town.
