About coffee in Ostrava

In 1928 Moravian Ostrava alone had eighteen grand cafés, and their owners liked to say that only Prague had more. The most famous of them, the Elektra, took up the ground floor of the Miners' House - sculptures of miners and steelworkers on the facade, spittoons and no-spitting signs inside, both required by the building regulations of the day. Then socialism set about chasing café idlers out into the fields and the factories, and little was left of the great prewar establishments: the Fénix ended up as a Vietnamese textile hall. The Elektra was the only one to survive, and today you drink your coffee in it inside a bank branch.
