About coffee in Kassel
To drink coffee legally in Hesse-Kassel you had to buy six pounds of raw beans at a time: merchants were not allowed to sell it roasted and ground, and green only in sacks that size. So roasting moved into people's homes, and a house where somebody is roasting coffee can be smelled all down the street. Enforcement fell to customs men, whom the people nicknamed Kaffeeriecher, coffee sniffers; they walked into parlours and looked into people's cups and pots, so more than one quiet gathering round a table ended in fear. It did not help: the ban had to be proclaimed over and over again, and years later the landgrave's successor concluded that people here were drinking even more coffee than before.
