In October 1612 the widow Merg Scholl was arrested here, and in the spring she was burned along with two other women. For years afterwards Bodenheim was one of the centres of Europe's witch hunts: after denunciations, in custody and under torture, at least twenty-seven people died - not in a city, but in a farming village outside Mainz. The parish council cleared them of the charges in February 2021, four hundred and eight years after the verdict. It is the oldest matter that council has ever had to settle.
