About coffee in Marburg
In the 1770s drinking coffee was a punishable offense in Marburg - but only for part of the town: professors, officers and wealthy merchants were allowed it, a craftsman and a washerwoman were not. A cup got you four days of roadwork, and you had to work them off in person, because the rule forbade sending servants or children in your place. The surviving list of those punished has nine men, forty-five women and two children on it. The confiscated grinders and pots were then sold off by the town at auction, and a third of the takings went to the same policemen who had found them.
