On Mühldorf's town square, nearly half a kilometre long, you won't see a single roof. The townhouses end at the top in a tall, straight wall, and behind it hides a sunken valley roof — rainwater drains through a gutter running right through the middle of the house, and the only trace of a roof is the row of drain openings in the façade. This is how they built here after the fires that ate through the towns on the Inn and the Salzach in the 16th and 17th centuries: a wall carried up above the roof kept the flames from leaping to the neighbour's, and gave a ladder something to lean on. That's why the square doesn't read as a row of houses, but as one long room with no ceiling.
