About coffee in Zwingenberg
The synagogue in Zwingenberg survived Kristallnacht because a dead man was lying within its walls that night. In the apartment built onto it a vigil was being kept over the coffin of the son of the Schawwesgoi, the non-Jewish neighbor who did the work forbidden to the congregation on the Sabbath, and the arsonists left. The inscriptions and emblems were chiseled off the facade only later; in 1945 the building was sold, and since then someone has simply been living in it. Today a local association is trying to bring it back to life: a house that survived thanks to somebody else's mourning.
