About coffee in Lindau
After the war Lindau stopped being part of Bavaria. It was the only Bavarian district to end up in the French occupation zone, because the French needed a land bridge to their zone in Austria, and for a decade it ran like a little state of its own: its own courts, its own tax office and a district president who wrote the law and enforced it himself. To travel to the rest of Swabia, held by the Americans, you needed a pass, and in the meantime the little town found time to open itself a casino. The act that folded it back into Bavaria is called Lex Lindau and only came into force in 1956; all that survives of the statelet today is a chamber of industry and commerce.
