About coffee in Lippstadt
For more than four hundred years Lippstadt belonged to two lords at once: to Lippe and to the counts von der Mark, and after them to Prussia. The agreement of 1445 had a clause that reads like a joke today - if the two owners could not come to terms, the dispute was settled by the town council, which meant the town sat in judgement on its own lords. For decades it played one off against the other, until in the Reformation the two finally reached an understanding and cut it off from trade; the blockade broke the town in two years. That dual rule ended not in a war but in a bank transfer: Prussia bought out Lippe's share for an annual payment and that was that.
