About coffee in Wuppertal

In Wuppertal coffee can be a meal rather than a drink. The Bergische Kaffeetafel is a table you sit at for several hours: sweet raisin bread and dark bread, sugar beet syrup, rice pudding with cinnamon, cold cuts and waffles with cherries. The custom grew out of Sunday outings by townspeople from the industrial cities into the countryside, where the hosts laid out for their visitors everything they had in the pantry. The war nearly finished it off, and it was put back together in 1963 by the director of the museum in neighboring Wülfrath: he wrote down what belongs on the table and set loose the slogan Koffeedrenken met allem Dröm un Dran, which everyone now takes for immemorial.
