About coffee in Nuremberg
Seven decades passed between Nuremberg's first coffee house and its second, and that was no accident. The innkeeper Conrad Stör promised the confectioner who opened it two hundred guilders for being let in on the art of brewing coffee, and then never paid a penny. The dispute dragged on for six years and left seventy-three pages of files in the city archive; the confectioner lost both the money and his licence, and the Störs held the exclusive privilege of serving coffee until 1758. Coffee did not arrive here as a fashion - it arrived as somebody's property.
