Specialty coffee in Hamburg: 7 checked cafés

About coffee in Hamburg

In the port of Hamburg coffee was an instrument of social policy, not a pleasure. From the 1880s Kaffeeklappen were set up here for the dockers - eating houses with a ban on alcohol, where food and coffee were served through a hatch cut in the kitchen wall; that flap gave them their name. The idea came from London along with the argument that a worker on coffee works more carefully than a worker on vodka, so the largest of these halls fed eight hundred people at a time. When cranes and containers took away the work the Klappen existed for, coffee lost along with it - the association that ran them went bankrupt in 1975.
