At night, in January 1814, in the Kiel palace on Dänische Straße, Denmark handed Norway over to Sweden and got a Swedish piece of Pomerania in return. The Norwegians refused to accept it and four months later passed their own constitution at Eidsvoll - the same one that is still in force there today. That is why the most important Norwegian holiday falls on 17 May: it is an answer to a document signed in Kiel. The palace itself was destroyed by an air raid late in the war, the rubble was cleared away, and today a church administration office stands there, along with a stone stele you have to want to notice.
