Coffee came to Pressburg with a defeated army: after the Turks retreated from Vienna, sacks of beans were said to have been left behind on the Danube. The first coffee house here was opened by a Pole named Kartsoly, and when in 1752 the owners of such places asked the city council for a guild of their own, they were refused, since in the city's view coffee houses were corrupting the young. The council lost that argument outright: before the First World War there were close to thirty of them in town, and people went for chess, billiards and fresh newspapers from Vienna. Bratislava has been drinking coffee against its own town hall for nearly three hundred years.
