About coffee in Regensburg
The oldest coffee house in Germany still in business has been open here since 1686 - a year after the first in Vienna and more than thirty years before the first in Berlin. Coffee was brought here not by trade but by diplomacy: in the town hall the Imperial Diet sat without a break for a hundred and forty years, and the taste for the black brew was brought in by Louis XIV's envoys. The place opened opposite the assembly hall, so high politics was settled in the back room, over a pot of coffee. The Diet was dissolved two centuries ago; the coffee house still opens at ten.
