Erfurt made its money on woad, an unremarkable plant that yielded a deep blue. The dye ripened in the attics of merchants' houses, doused with urine to get the fermentation going; the stench was the price the town paid for that color. It paid so well that in 1392 the burghers founded themselves a university, and the trade itself was open only to the richest: in 1511 sixty-eight men held a license. Then cheaper indigo arrived by sea, and all that was left of the blue were street names.
