On one of Neustadt's streets a workshop has been doing the same thing since 1803: printing a pattern onto linen and then dipping it in indigo - the white stays where the dye cannot get in. The family is running it in the seventh generation and passes the dye-bath recipes down like a secret rather than a set of instructions. More than seven hundred wooden printing blocks lie there, some of them between a hundred and fifty and three hundred years old, and new ones barely appear: in all of Germany supposedly three people can still cut them. It is one of the last dyehouses of its kind in the country - not a museum piece, but a workshop where you can still order a tablecloth.
