The most famous coffee house in old Gdańsk was run by a Mennonite, Anton Momber, and its fame reached far enough that in 1758 it got a printed poem in its honour. You did not go there just for a cup: there were newspapers from Leiden, The Hague and Paris, a clock with a figure of King David playing the harp, an orangery, an aviary of exotic birds and three fountains in the garden. Merchants from half of Europe came in for St Dominic's Fair, and a description of the place noted with pride that no atheist had ever crossed its threshold. The last owner turned it into a coffee roastery, the building was destroyed in 1945 and never rebuilt - today a lawn grows at that address on Słodowników.
