A Francoforte c'era una volta la Kaffeegasse, un vicolo nella città vecchia che prendeva il nome dal primo caffè del posto, aperto nel 1689 da un mercante di spezie di Lubecca. L'affare andava bene, eppure per quasi cent'anni i caffè in città sono rimasti esattamente tre. I pasticcieri si sono preoccupati che quei tre non gli rovinassero il mestiere: il municipio vietò di servire con il caffè gelati e dolci, e ancora a metà Ottocento rispediva a casa chi voleva vendere l'uno insieme agli altri. Il vicolo non c'è più, e il caffè di qui per gran parte della sua storia ha avuto in offerta solo due cose: caffè e giornali.
