On 31 July 1794, the day yet another Swedish coffee ban came into force, Stockholm held a funeral for it. At the spa on Djurgården, Carl Israel Hallman delivered a eulogy over the goddess Cofféa, who had just fled Sweden, and in the final days before the ban the city threw farewell coffee parties. Officials afterwards looked in on taverns and so-called coffee houses, but not private kitchens, and after two years the ban fell. The Crown banned coffee five times in seventy years and had to back down every time.
