Specialty Coffee in Bratislava: 12 Cafes, Nine Areas, Three Rides
A walk through the Old Town and Nivy, then a bus over the Danube and two trams out, to twelve specialty cafes from the Specialty Atlas map.

Bratislava is the only capital in the world that borders two other countries. Austria starts at the edge of Petržalka, Hungary a little further south, and Vienna is about an hour away by train. Plenty of visitors treat the city as a day out from there: the castle, the main square, a plate of halušky, back before dark.
The city they leave behind has been busy. A new downtown has gone up east of the Old Town, built over the bus station, with the tallest building in Slovakia standing next to it. The rebuilt tram line runs all the way out to Dúbravka again. And Petržalka, the estate of prefabricated blocks across the Danube, is somewhere people live their whole week, coffee included.
This guide takes twelve specialty cafes from the Specialty Atlas map and puts them in the order you would reach them. Five stops in the Old Town on foot, then Nivy, then three rides: south over the river, north up Račianska, and west to Dúbravka.
The walking part needs no help. The rides do: before you get on a bus to Petržalka you want to know that the cafe at the other end is open, and what it is pouring. That is what Specialty Atlas is for. It is a free app for iOS and Android, every cafe below has a profile in it, and it shows the beans on the bar, the brew methods, what each place offers and how far it is from where you are standing. Download the app before you set off, or browse the Bratislava city page first.
Medená, behind the opera house
The historic building of the Slovak National Theatre still stages opera and ballet, and tour groups stop for photographs at the Ganymede fountain in front of it. One street behind, Medená is flats, a kindergarten and law students on their way to the faculty.
6:57a.m. at Medená 19 is named after its opening time, and means it: weekdays from 06:57 to 17:00, weekends from 08:00. Espresso and milk drinks, pastries and cakes, a few seats, dogs welcome. If you are catching an early train, this is the one already open.
Hlavné námestie, under the town hall tower
The tower of the Old Town Hall looks down on the square, and the building under it now holds the city museum. In December it fills with Christmas market stalls.
The Miners Coffee TownHall is at Hlavné námestie 2, in what the cafe calls a building that has stood longer than specialty coffee has existed. Inside are vaulted ceilings, arched windows, white tile, a long bench and a lot of plants. Espresso and milk drinks, matcha, plant milk, pastries and vegan options, with bags of coffee and accessories to take home.
Námestie SNP and the old market hall
The old market hall on the square was built in 1910 and now hosts markets and events. Across from it stands the memorial to the Slovak National Uprising, which gives the square its name.
Lab.cafe is at Námestie SNP 25, in the market hall building, and calls itself a cafe and workshop. The workshop is real: its website describes a fully equipped one, with 3D printing, engraving and laser cutting for anyone who brings an idea. The cafe side has espresso tonic, decaf, matcha, plant milk and breakfast, plus wifi and room for a laptop.
Kollárovo námestie and the trams on Špitálska
Kollárovo námestie has the Nová scéna theatre on one side and a small park in the middle that the city has argued over for more than a decade. A developer wants an underground car park beneath it. Activists wanted the trees kept, and the plan shrank to a third of its original size.
Rooster's Corner at Kollárovo námestie 16 says it has no philosophy at all, just good coffee and cheeky humour, and a promise to get you through Monday. Espresso and milk drinks, cakes, bags of coffee, free water, a few seats and room for the dog.
A short walk east, trams run along Špitálska towards Americké námestie. LOT coffee at Špitálska 55 is a roastery and coffee shop in one, and its website says you can take your coffee straight off the shelf, for filter, espresso, cold brew or decaf. There are few seats and no toilet, so treat it as a stop rather than a base.
Dunajská and Grösslingová, by the Blue Church
On Dunajská, the actor Július Satinský rides a bronze bicycle, put there in 2006. A few minutes away, the Blue Church on Bezručova draws the photographers, and the grammar school on Grösslingová repeats its Hungarian Secession style.
Mimóza at Dunajská 15 is a gelateria first. It says it learned from the best, in Bologna, where its recipes come from. It also does breakfast, cold brew, matcha, kombucha and fresh juice, with many seats inside and a terrace outside.
Round the corner, Otto! at Grösslingová 26 is a bistro: in its own words, big breakfasts and other good food, natural wine and coffee from well-known roasters. Espresso tonic, cold brew, kombucha, plant milk, gluten-free options, a kids' corner and tables outside.
Nivy, under the tallest building in Slovakia
The city's main bus station sits underground here, open around the clock, with a shopping centre and a market above it and a green roof on top: running track, community gardens, beehives. Nivy Tower, next to it, is the tallest building in the country.
Foxford is in the complex, at Mlynské nivy 5A. It is one of a chain of book cafes that runs from Bratislava to Košice, Poprad, Prešov, Levice, Žilina and Martin, full of coffee and books. It has the longest list in this guide: V60, Chemex and Kalita, AeroPress, espresso tonic, decaf, breakfast and lunch, vegan and gluten-free options, and plenty of seats for waiting out a late bus.
A few hundred metres back towards the Old Town on the same street, SOREN at Mlynské nivy 6 sums itself up in four words: specialty coffee and fresh cakes. Add nitro cold brew, espresso tonic, kombucha and a few seats outside.
Petržalka, at the borough office
Petržalka is the largest housing estate in Slovakia, blocks of flats on the right bank of the Danube that run up to the Austrian border. Kutlíkova 17, in the Háje quarter, is the address of the borough office, and the buses stop outside.
Goriffee is at the same address, Kutlíkova 17. It promises precisely made coffee and a long list of teas from baristas who care about every detail, along with cakes, coffee and non-coffee cocktails and something small to eat. Cold brew, plant milk, coffee bags and accessories, many seats, a kids' corner and room for a laptop.
Račianske mýto, where five streets meet
Račianska, Šancová, Legionárska, Mýtna and Radlinského all run into this junction, with a small park in the middle and some of the city's main tram and bus stops around it.
Triple five coffee roasters - cafe 2 is a ten-minute walk north, at Račianska 26A in Nové Mesto. The company calls itself a small coffee roaster based in Bratislava, and its website says it goes after direct trade, microlot and rare coffees. The cafe has many seats, breakfast, vegan options, a kids' corner and step-free access, which makes it the place on this list to sit down for a while.
Dúbravka, by the farmers' market
The tram line out through Karlova Ves was rebuilt and has run all the way to Dúbravka since 2020, and the Alexyho stop leaves you a few minutes from Trhová. The name means Market Street, and it has one: the Gazdovský trh, near the Dúbravka culture house.
black. trhová at Trhová 34 belongs to a roastery that started as a small espresso bar on Gorkého and now calls itself a local Bratislava roaster with world ambitions. Its website says it has roasted since 2017 and took first and third place at the Slovak Roasting Masters, and a post there from June 2026 introduces the Dúbravka cafe as its newest space. Espresso and milk drinks, cakes, bags of coffee, wifi, a terrace and a kids' corner.
Put the map in your pocket
This guide was right on the day it was written. The app keeps being right after that. Everything above is in Specialty Atlas, free on iOS and Android:
- What is on the bar today. The beans each cafe is pouring now, with roaster, origin and process, kept up to date by the cafes.
- Sorted by distance. Every specialty cafe near you, nearest first, with opening hours you can trust.
- Filters for the way you drink. Pour-over, plant milk, decaf, laptop friendly, dog friendly, outdoor seating, breakfast.
- A passport with a stamp for Bratislava. Scan the QR code at the counter and the visit goes into your coffee passport.
- Beans matched to your palate. Answer a few questions once and every bean in the app is scored against your taste.
Download Specialty Atlas before the first ride out of the Old Town. The Bratislava city page works for planning on a laptop, but the live menus, the map, the passport and the bean matching are in the app.
