In August 1933, Nitra celebrated the 1,100th anniversary of the first church in this part of Europe, which tradition says Prince Pribina built here. Andrej Hlinka, a priest and leader of the Slovak autonomists, was not supposed to speak. But 80,000 to 100,000 people gathered at the airfield in Janíkovce outside Nitra and chanted his name until students carried him up onto the platform in their arms. The church jubilee ended with the radio broadcast cut off and a crowd drowning out the Czechoslovak anthem with "Hej, Slováci!"
