During the autarky years coffee vanished from Bologna so completely that people drank roasted acorn, fig and chicory, sold under the brands Extra, Cammello and Suora, brewed in a napoletana filled halfway. The city's biggest coffee importer, Filicori Zecchini, brought out Mokasan at the time - a caffeine-free brew advertised as 'il caffè della salute'. The local Resto del Carlino explained to its readers that coffee was more a habit than a need, and recommended an infusion of mallow or lime blossom. A city once told it did not need coffee now takes it exceptionally seriously.
