About coffee in Gniezno
In Gniezno coffee was sold at a Prussian address but in Polish: when Zygmunt Migdałek opened his "Merkur" in 1910 on what is now Dąbrówki street, then still Wilhelmstrasse, the sign read "Polish specialist store for coffee, tea and sweets, with roastery". He roasted on electric machines and boasted about it in the press as the newest system. They said passengers coming off the train could smell his roastery from the turn out of Lecha into Chrobrego. "Merkur" did not survive the war, and the town lost that smell along with it.
