About coffee in Stupava
Stupavské zelé is cabbage and salt, nothing else — two kilos of salt to a hundred kilos of heads. It was tamped down in wooden vats more than two and a half metres tall by people in heavy boots with metal soles, so that not a single air bubble was left inside. Under socialism it was smuggled into Austria, where it fetched more than four times the official price. Then again, the word "zelé" came from outside too: Croatian settlers brought it in the 16th century, along with their "zelje".
