About coffee in Sered
In the small town of Sereď, coffee grew in the fields for a century. In 1920 the firm Heinrich Franck Söhne bought the local factory, turned it into a huge chicory drying plant and introduced the crop to the surrounding area. A roastery was built too — only instead of beans, it roasted chicory root and grain. The plant is still running and still sells ground roasted chicory under the Cigória brand, and for a hundred years the local roastery has smelled of root, not bean.
