For almost the entire 20th century, Senica lived off silk that never saw a silkworm. Artificial viscose fibre began to be made here in former distilleries, and in the 1930s people checked every day whether smoke was coming out of the factory chimney, because smoke meant work. Hodvábka, as the factory was known locally, employed thousands and paid for the town's swimming pool, stadium, amphitheatre and even an airfield. Even its end was recorded to the minute: viscose production here stopped on 21 April 2005 at 17:25.
