Bohuslav Martinů, one of the most important Czech composers of the 20th century, was born thirty-six metres above Polička, in a room in the tower of St James's Church. The room was built for a fire watchman when the new church went up in place of the old one, which had been consumed by a great fire. The composer's father, a shoemaker by trade, kept watch for fires from up there day and night, wound the clock and rang the bells, while an apprentice known as Grandpa slept under the clockwork. The family of five lived there until Bohuslav was eleven, and every trip out of the house began with 192 steps down.
