In the cellar of Mikulov castle stands a barrel from 1643 that holds more than a hundred thousand litres. A cooper from Brno built it for the Dietrichsteins, and it was filled with tithe wine — a tax paid here not in money but in wine. At the end of the war the castle above it burned to its foundations, and right afterwards the town's Germans, who before the war had made up more than four-fifths of its population, were expelled. Of the Mikulov that used to fill it, the barrel is about all that's left.
