Specialty coffee in Locorotondo

Locorotondo simply means round place, and it is not a metaphor: the streets run in concentric rings along the line of the old walls, so walk straight ahead and you come back to where you started. The houses in the old town are cummerse, narrow buildings with a steep pitched roof covered in chiancarelle, thin overlapping slabs of limestone. Everybody mistakes them for trulli, but it is an entirely different job: a trullo stands dry, without mortar, while a cummersa is mortared and its roof has a sharper, more drawn-out profile. The upshot is something perverse, because eight kilometres from Alberobello, in full Apulian sun, the roofs look as if they were shipped in from northern Europe.
